Whiteout Wednesday: 5 White Bathrooms with Marble

White kitchens and baths are definitely the hottest trend I am seeing right now. It's also the subject I get asked about the most. From white Carrara marble to white quartz there is a lot to consider when using white countertops.
Whiteout Wednesday is a weekly feature where I show five kitchens and/ or baths that have used white in a beautiful way.
If you have a white kitchen or bath that you would like to see featured here please email me.

Blue Flower Granite Master Bath & Laundry from MGS by Design

Last week I posted the Bianco Romano granite kitchen in this home that we did the countertops in. Today I have the beautiful Master vanity and Laundry room. The homeowner chose a gorgeous slab of 2 cm Blue Flower granite for these areas.

Here's the Master Vanity.

Whiteout Wednesday: Five White Powder Bathrooms

White kitchens and baths are definitely the hottest trend I am seeing right now. It's also the subject I get asked about the most. From white Carrara marble to white quartz there is a lot to consider when using white countertops.

Usually on Whiteout Wednesday I show white kitchens and sometimes I show white bathrooms (which are usually master bathrooms). This week I'm changing it up a bit and am featuring five beautifully white Powder Bathrooms.
I love how people went bold with the walls in all five of these baths, whether it was the wallpaper, black trim or Carrara marble.
Enjoy!

FAQ Friday: What Are Granite Remnants & When Should I Use Them?

Granite (or marble, limestone, quartz, soapstone, etc) remnants are a great choice for smaller projects.

What are remnants?  They are the pieces left over from other jobs.
Most granite slabs are between 50-60 square feet.  A typical kitchen uses two slabs.  We have to buy the full slab whether we are using 1/8 of it or 3/4 of it.  More often than not there are usable pieces left over.
We keep those remnants and sell them for smaller jobs such as vanities, furniture pieces, fireplace surrounds, etc.

Unless your vanity is rather large or if you have two vanities in one bathroom it is silly to buy a whole slab for a little vanity.  It will save you quite a bit of money to just use one of our remnants.  Sometimes the selection is better than others, but we usually have a lot to choose from.

Even this large double vanity above was a remnant from our yard.

Vintage-Style Calacatta Gold Marble Bathroom

Have you seen this gorgeous bathroom on House Beautiful's website?
It's designed by Carrie Hayden. There is an interview with her about the room on HB's website, read it here.

All of the marble is Calacatta Gold.
Calacatta Gold is a beautiful stone that is usually quite pricey.  It is white with grey and gold veining.
This is generally not my style, but I'm dying over every detail of the bathroom!  The mirrored vanities were originally the homeowner's dressers.  They added the sit down bridge in between and it matches beautifully.

Vanities with Marble Countertops from MGS by Design

I know I've been showing a lot of our work lately, I'm just trying to play catch up on all the older job photos that we have.
Today I thought I'd show a few vanities that we have done with marble countertops.

First is this beautiful Carrara marble.  The slab is 2 cm with a 1 1/2" Ogee Square edge detail.

The next two pictures are of the same vanity.  The marble is Crema Marfil, this Crema Marfil has more veining than typical, it was a beautiful slab.  It's 2 cm and has a 1 1/4" Deep Bevel edge detail.

This next vanity is the same marble but has a 1 1/2" Ogee Square edge detail.

So I lied, these next two countertops aren't marble.  They are actually quartz, I think Silestone.

Diana Real Marble Vanities from MGS by Design

Happy Friday!
Today I thought I'd share a few photos from our portfolio. All three vanities are Diana Real marble.
You can't see the details in the photo below very well, but the edge detail is an Ogee Square and the undermount sinks are square shaped.
I may have shown this vanity here before, and if I did, I probably mentioned that I love the design of the vanity. The edge detail is a 1 1/4" Bevel.
I love the bump out with the radius for the make-up table part of the vanity. The stone vessel sinks are really beautiful too. The edge detail on this vanity is an Ogee Square.

Slab Sunday: Seafoam Green Granite

Seafoam Green granite is quarried from a bedrock quarry in Brazil

Photo: MGS by Design
It is a higher priced granite due to it's availability and also the amount of work that goes into getting the slabs ready to sell at the quarry.
I was going to explain the process, but I found Arizona Tile does it better than I could. Here is the information from their website....
"It is a unique and difficult stone to produce. Lava, at extremely high temperatures, traveled through tubes in the earth millions of years ago, and forced the green pigment into the surrounding bedrock. The lava settled at the surface of the earth and slowly cooled, which is quarried as Verde Tunas. Small to medium voids were created and filled with sand during the development of Seafoam Green. These softer areas are chiseled out and filled with Seafoam granite chips and an epoxy during early processing stages of the slab. Because this epoxy must be hand- ground before the final polishing, these areas may be higher or lower than the actual surface of the stone. Finally, a mesh backing is adhered to the back of the stone to ensure safety while handling and fabricating the slab."

Below is my favorite photo of the day. It comes from J.B. Turner & Sons. Check out that chandelier! I love how they combined the white marble island with Seafoam Green on the perimeter. So beautiful!

So remember, epoxy in these slabs is normal. It's what makes Seafoam Green what it is, otherwise it would just be Verde Tunas. The epoxy adds to it's beauty and the uniqueness of the stone.

Seafoam Green is available in 2 cm and 3 cm slabs.

Slab Sunday: Rain Forest Green Marble

Rain Forest Green is quarried from a bedrock quarry in India.

Sidenote:  Rain Forest Green is not technically a marble, it's a Serpentinite. Serpentinite is a rock composed predominantly of one or more serpentine minerals. If you'd like to read a little more about Serpentinite's read here and/or here.
Commercially though, Rain Forest Green is sold as a marble. Therefore I will refer to it as a marble from here on out. I just didn't want to get a bunch of emails letting me know how wrong I am for calling it a marble. :)

Other names for Rain Forest Green include: Bidasar Green and Vidasar Green.

Due to Rain Forest Green actually being a Serpentinite, it does behave differently than a marble. It is harder and it's recommended that it's cut with a granite blade instead of a marble blade. It won't etch or stain as easily as a marble will, but I still probably wouldn't recommend it in a kitchen for most people. (See my post here about marble kitchens.)

The photo below is from our portfolio.

This marble can change pretty dramatically from bundle to bundle, so make sure to pick out your exact slab. There is also a color called Rain Forest Brown. It's the same pattern and comes from the same quarry, the background is just brown rather than green.  You can read more about it here.
Above photo from MGS by Design. (That's us!)
Below is my favorite photo of the day. Everything about this fireplace from Boston Design Blog is amazing.

Rain Forest Green comes from the quarry with a polished finish. This marble is beautiful when with a honed finish or when a brushed finish has been applied. Be sure to ask your fabricator about these options when considering Rain Forest Green.

A lot of people use this marble for fountains. This gorgeous fountain is from Kinetic Fountains.

Rain Forest Green is available in 2 cm and 3 cm granite slabs as well as tile. This is a pretty popular marble, so you will also see it in a lot of medallions and listelles.
