3 Beautiful Slab Showers

Did you know that we do slab showers?
They aren't cheap, but they definitely are beautiful.  Plus they cut down on cleaning grout...... and I've never met anyone who likes cleaning grout!
This first photo is from the Velvet & Linen blog.  This bathroom is quite stunning, the marble is Calacatta.

Bathtubs Carved Out of Stone

Maybe it's due to the fact that I am a total geek about stone, but I LOVE bathtubs that are carved out of blocks of stone.
Stone Forest is one of those websites that I could spend hours on, swooning over their products.
Today I thought I'd share some of my favorite bathtubs from their site.

I love the shape of this bathtub. It's called the Rubix Bathtub and is shown in Carrara marble.

Next is a Bathtub with a Rolled Rim. Shown in a multi-colored onyx.

This Carrara bathtub is called the Papillon. It is my favorite. I sort of want to die over how much I love it.

The Absolute Black granite Soaking Tub is pretty amazing. I am more of a lay-in-the-tub sort of gal though, so I don't think I'd spend my hard earned cash on this one....but it sure looks great!

This Oval Bathtub in Absolute Black granite is polished on the inside and on the rim, and is chiseled on the outside. I love the look that this creates. I also love the setting of this particular tub on the pebbles, it's a great look.

Last is the Old World Bathtub shown in Rasalia marble.

All the bathtubs are custom made to order, on their website they show their lead time at about 3 weeks. You choose the stone that you would like to have your bathtub made out of.
I'm going to go ahead and assume these are pretty pricey, so I'll keep dreaming and swooning over their website for now.

Saturday Link Up!

I'm always finding fun articles from around the web that I want to share with you, our readers.  Every Saturday I link up my favorite articles from the week that I think you'll enjoy as well.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

10 Fabulously Fanciful Bathrooms was such a fun article on Houzz.  The featured baths were over-the-top and amazing in the best way.  It's a must read!
This bath below is backlit Alabaster.

I don't know about you guys, but I always go into purging mode after Christmas.   I am sick of all the excess of the holiday and I just have to get rid of things asap!  I know it's February, but I'm still cleaning out my house like crazy.   The article, Ultimate Storage-Packed Kitchens on Better Homes & Gardens has some great organizing ideas that I'll be using.

Last, head over to Cultivate and check out the kitchens in the running for 2012 Kitchen of the Year.  They are all unique and fantastic kitchens.  It's going to be hard to choose, but you must vote!

Full Slab Showers = Most Amazing Thing Ever

If you have....
  • A good amount of money to spend on your bath.
  • The desire for a unique and beautiful focal point in your bathroom.
  • No reason to clean grout lines.
Then.... you should totally consider using a full slab in your shower!
Juan Montoya Design via Interiors.  Shower is two bookmatched slabs of Azul Macauba quartzite.  Stuh-nning!
Yes, this is an expensive option.
Why?  Well, slabs (especially the stunning, focal point kind) are pretty expensive alone.  Add a good amount of labor costs to the equation and it's definitely not the cheapest option for a shower.
A lot of people ask me why the installation costs are so high and why they need to hire a knowledgeable and experienced installer.  I tell them if they don't want a 700 lb slab of stone falling on them while they are shaving their legs then they should pay to hire the best!  :)

Cost aside, I think most of you will agree....it's sure a ridiculously beautiful option!

If the shower is large enough that it requires more than one slab per wall make sure to select slabs that are bookmatched.  Both showers in the two photos above have bookmatched slabs.  As you can see, it makes for an even more interesting and beautiful work of art.

Most showers will require just one slab per wall.  You can use slabs on all of the shower walls, or you can "frame" the slab with tile like in the photo below.
The shower would be too busy looking if the Onyx slab was everywhere.  By keeping it on one wall it allows the beauty of the Onyx to shine.
Also notice how well they designed the lighting in this shower.

FAQ Friday: What Does 'Bookmatching' Slabs Mean?

"Bookmatched" refers to how the slabs are cut and polished at the factory.
When slabs are bookmatched it means that instead of polishing the same face of each slab, they alternate for them so that they open up like a book.  Thus the name.
Here's an example of Statuary marble in a bath.  All of the walls are made out of slab.  The seam is where the upside down 'V' is.  See how it opens up and mirrors itself perfectly?

Bookmatching can be expensive, as there is a large amount of waste.
Bookmatched slabs are usually used on feature walls, large islands and slab showers.
When we bookmatch the stone it's always fun to see what the design looks like.  It reminds me of abstract (and sometimes not too abstract) art.  We've seen the silhouette of a woman, animals, faces, hearts, just to name a few things.

Also keep in mind that not all stone can be bookmatched, it depends on the characteristics of the stone.  It wouldn't make sense to bookmatch Tropic Brown granite.
They are typically stones with strong veins and lines that create very geometric patterns that make your floor, walls or countertops much more interesting.
Calacatta Gold (below) really shows it's beauty when bookmatched.

The factory that cuts and polishes the stone, needs to change the process when the slabs are bookmatched.  Instead of polishing the same face of each slab, they alternate for them to bookmatch. This obviously implies an extra cost for the factory, so it’s really only done with expensive stones that, given their naturally formed veins and lines, look beautiful bookmatched.
If you know you need your slabs to be bookmatched be sure to let your stone supplier know when you are selecting your slabs.  The supplier needs to verify that they give you the correct slabs that bookmatch each other.

Slab Sunday: Green Onyx

Green Onyx comes from a dyke quarry in Pakistan. This quarry produces three color ranges, a light green, a dark green and a multi-colored onyx.
The slabs are an overall green but they have red, brown and burgundy areas that will vary between bundles along with the depth of the green tone.
One of my favorite things about onyx is the transparent portions of the slab that, when back lit, will allow light to pass through, illuminating the stone. I have done projects from kitchens, vanities & desks to wall art where the onyx has been back lit. It is always breathtaking.  To read more about backlighting onyx go here.
The full slab in the shower below is back lit.  Amazing isn't it?!?

Onyx is a very soft stone. It is not necessarily recommended for kitchens, though it has been done plenty of times! You just have to be aware of the maintenance that it will require. It's not a matter of if it will scratch, but when it will scratch. Onyx will also etch if anything acidic gets on it.

Green Onyx is used a lot for sinks, decorative accessories and tile in all sizes.

Green Onyx mainly available in 2 cm slabs, though sometimes it does come in the 3 cm thickness.

Accent Walls with Full Slabs of Onyx & Marble

The hubs and I watched the movie Crazy, Stupid, Love over the weekend and in the bar where Steve Carell is hanging out they have an amazing wall of onyx.
The photo below is the best picture I could find.  As you can see in the top left it's two slabs that are bookmatched.  It's backlit as well which really makes the onyx stunning.

Sometimes slabs are just too beautiful to cut up!  That's when we need to think outside of the countertop.  We can hang slabs on walls, surround a fireplace with the slab, frame it like a picture or use the slab as the actual wall.
Here are a few examples...

FAQ Friday: Full Slab Fireplace Inspiration

This question comes from Rob in Colorado...
"I've gutted a home in Vail and want to do a full slab of something cool (marble, onyx, quartzite) on the fireplace.  I don't know what I want, I just want something that will be the showpiece of the home.  Can you post pictures to get my mind going?  I know I'm not giving you much info, I really am just looking for inspiration.  I designed my kitchen based off of inspiration I got from your blog!"

Thanks for the email Rob.  It's nice to hear from our male readers.  :)  I'm glad I could help with the kitchen!

I have some really beautiful fireplace pictures that I'm sure will inspire you to design something beautiful for your home.
Enjoy!

Beautiful Powder Bath Ideas

I'm repeating myself here, but I'll say it again... Powder Baths are a great place to have some fun when decorating your home.  You will often hear it called "the jewel box" of the home.
Maybe it's because you don't have to be as practical.  You can use a fun wallpaper and not worry about the steam from your shower.  You can put in a vessel sink and not think about how the toothpaste will look smeared down the side of it.
Or it could be that it's easier to afford all the fun/ expensive items because the square footage is quite a bit less than the other bathrooms in most homes.  So you can afford to use a really cool tile all the way up the walls.
The Powder Bath is generally for guests, show your friends and family your creative side!
Here are some photos of beautiful Powder Baths for inspiration...
