Slab Sunday: Caramel Onyx

Caramel Onyx is quarried from a dyke quarry in Iran.
Caramel Onyx is a little darker than a similar stone, Honey Onyx.
It looks a lot like caramel in color and pattern, thus the name.

From Arizona Tiles' website..."This unique stone is found in a thin layer about three feet thick. The blocks are quarried horizontally in order to cut large cross-cut slabs."

Caramel Onyx has the transparent areas in the stone, so it's a great material to use for backlighting.  Here's an example of a bar that is backlit.
This first photo is without the lights on...

Quite beautiful isn't it?
Now, here's the same bar with the lights turned on...

It looks like a totally different stone!

Caramel Onyx is available in 2 cm & 3 cm slabs.

They did do a great job with the lighting. We've all seen the bad backlighting! :)
