I really like this look, it's a good alternate to the raised bar that's been so popular the last few years.

It's interesting, I really love looking at these kitchens, but I can't help but wonder how well a banquette attached to an island actually functions. For one thing, you really only get out from your island from one side (well you could go the banquette direction, but it's a longer walk), but I just think about the mess that's on the counters after cooking and I can't think it would be too relaxing to sit right next to that. But maybe I'm just a messy cook!
You are right Erin, it kind of defeats the purpose of an island. It becomes more like a peninsula.
I really love the last picture though. It would hide the mess. ;)
I love the look, but don't think I would like the reality. We have a kitchen island, which is completely counter height and everyone hangs out there, just leaning on the counter our sitting on the barstools.
I do like the mess-hiding idea, though!
